보왕삼매론은 1395년 묘협스님이 지은 보왕삼매염불직지(寶王三昧念佛直指)에 나오는 10가지 격언입니다.

시련과 고난도 성장을 위한 밑거름이 될 수 있다는 내용입니다. 세상을 바라보는 유익한 관점을 제시해 줍니다.

1. 몸에 병 없기를 바라지 마라.
    몸에 병이 없으면 탐욕이 생기기 쉽나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    병고(病苦)로써 양약(良藥)을 삼으라 하셨느니라.

1. You shouldn't seek to have no disease in your body.
    If you have no disease you come to be greedy.
    That's why the Great Sage says,

    We should regard disease as good medicine for the body.

2. 세상살이에 곤란 없기를 바라지 마라.
    세상살이에 곤란이 없으면 사치한 마음이 생기나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    근심과 곤란으로 세상을 살아가라 하셨느니라.

2. You shouldn't seek not to suffer.
   If you have no suffering come to despise suffering and to be extravagant.
   That's why the Great Sage says,

   We should regard suffering as a good thing in our life. 

3. 공부하는데 마음에 장애(障碍) 없기를 바라지 마라.
    마음에 장애가 없으면 배우는 것이 넘치게 되나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    장애 속에서 해탈(解脫)을 얻으라 하셨느니라.  

3. You shouldn't worry about hindrances arising in your mind when you study.
    If there is no hindrance you study too much.
   That's why the Great Sage says,

   We should regard hindrance as a good thing in our mind. 

4. 수행하는데 마(魔) 없기를 바라지 마라.
    수행하는데 마가 없으면 서원(誓願)이 굳건해지지 못하나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    모든 마군(魔群)으로써 수행을 도와주는 벗을 삼으라 하셨느니라. 
 

4. You shouldn't seek not to encounter the evil one when you practice.
    If there is no evil your Great Vows weaken.
   That's why the Great Sage says,

   We should regard evil as a friend who helps us to keep practicing. 

5. 일을 꾀하되 쉽게 되기를 바라지 마라.
    일이 쉽게 되면 뜻을 경솔(輕率)한 데 두게 되나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    어려움을 겪어서 일을 성취하라 하셨느니라.

5. You shouldn't seek to find an easy way when you do something.
    If everything is easy you come to be careless.
   That's why the Great Sage says,

   You should regard difficulty as a good teacher. 

6. 친구를 사귀되 내가 이롭기를 바라지 마라.
    내가 이롭고자 하면 의리를 상하게 되나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    순결함으로써 사귐을 길게 하라 하셨느니라.  

6. You shouldn't seek to benefit from your friends.
    If you do you will lose them.
    That's why the Great Sage says,

    You should be sincere in keeping your friendships. 

7. 남이 내 뜻대로 순종해 주기를 바라지 마라.
    남이 내 뜻대로 순종해 주면 마음이 스스로 교만해 지나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    내 뜻에 맞지 않는 사람들로써 원림(園林)을 삼으라 하셨느니라. 

7. You shouldn't seek to win respect from others.
   If you do you come to be arrogant.
   That's why the Great Sage says,

   You should make friends who are likely to criticize you. 

8. 덕을 베풀면서 과보를 바라지 마라.
    과보를 바라면 도모(圖謀)하는 뜻을 가지게 되나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    덕 베푼 것을 헌신처럼 버리라 하셨느니라. 

8. You shouldn't seek to get merits from doing good deeds.
    If you do you always have the intention to do something.
   That's why the Great Sage says you shouldn't pay much attention to it. 

9. 이익을 분(分)에 넘치게 바라지 마라.
    이익이 분에 넘치면 어리석은 마음이 생기나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    적은 이익으로써 부자가 되라 하셨느니라. 

9. You shouldn't seek to make too much profit.
    If you do you become ignorant.
    That's why the Great Sage says,

    You should be satisfied with little profits. 

10. 억울함을 당해서 밝히려고 하지 마라.
    억울함을 밝히면 원망하는 마음을 가지게 되나니,
    그래서 성인이 말씀하시되,
    억울함을 당하는 것으로 수행하는 문을 삼으라 하셨느니라. 
 

10. You shouldn't want to clear your name when you are upset at being mistreated.
     If you do you come to cherish a grudge.
     That's why the Great Sage says,

     You should consider how being mistreated can really help your practice.
